His Christmas in NYC
Hi Everyone! Hope you all are enjoying your weekend. It’s Matt here. I have the privilege of writing today’s post as I thought it was only appropriate with the launch of our Gift Guide for Him today. Now, it may seem to us (us Guys) that we are easy to shop for. However, I know from personal experience based on feedback from Olivia, my Mom, and frankly anyone that shops for me, that I’m not. It’s not that I want outrageous things, it’s simply I don’t like making lists or telling someone what to buy me. It’s always been like that, at least since I was like 10.
When I was young, like most kids I assume, I knew exactly what I wanted my parents to get me and I would make sure I let them know. Nowadays, it just doesn’t matter. I prefer giving gifts. However, I do realize that we should oblige those that want to get us things and give them plenty of options. This way it’s easier for them to purchase the gift that they very much want to give me. I feel like I’m giving myself a lesson here. I have gotten better at this over the years though and have gotten some pretty cool things. Sebastian was on my list! Now, onto what I like to do and that’s give gifts. This year, I got something a little unique up my sleeve.
This will be the first time we have been a part from our extended families for Christmas. It’s going to be different, yet exciting, because we have this amazing little man now, Sebastian, we get to spend Christmas with in NYC. And since we aren’t traveling or having our folks come out here, I had to re-think my whole gift strategy. Most years, I actually buy everyone’s gifts online and ship them to my parents house. I do this for a few reasons. First, well, we usually fly home to the Midwest so our presents will be waiting for us when we get there. Second, it’s much less trouble to not have to bring an extra suitcase full of gifts when traveling. Lastly, my Mom (amazing by the way) typically wraps all my presents for me. I wasn’t blessed with the gift wrapping gene, although my Mom did a great job teaching me.
However, this year, I’m changing up my strategy. It’s actually something similar to what I use to do when we lived in San Francisco. I would pick up a stocking stuffer or two that were unique to San Francisco and/or California more broadly. Since a lot of my family didn’t get a chance to make it out there very often, it was nice to bring them a piece of where we lived. I was thinking this year, why don’t I do that but do something a little more curated this time. And what better city than NYC to hunt for cool things to get my family back home. It’s going to be a lot of fun to put together.
The idea is hardly groundbreaking but it’s a cool way to share some of the your life with those you love even when you aren’t there in person. Just go out and grab a few knick knacks, souvenirs, maybe some unique foods/condiments, books/magazines/prints, tickets, etc. Put them in a box and ship them home for the holidays. It will be a nice surprise and shows you put a lot of love into it. As much as we are going to miss our family, it will be pretty cool to know they are going to get something unique that we spent time putting together specifically for them. And bonus, it’s not going to be on their list or expected. 🙂
Thank you so much for stopping by and reading. We do really appreciate each and every one of you. Hope you all have the Happiest of Holidays!
– Matt
