Winters in New York City are beautiful around the holidays. However, as we head further into winter it all feels a little less magical and a lot colder. Having a few types of winter coats in your wardrobe is crucial to battling the fluctuating temperatures and snow storms until Spring comes back around. For most of us, storage also comes at a premium so I’ve narrowed it down to 3 must-have coats for winter in NYC.
Wool and wool blend coats are great at keeping you warm when temperatures drop. They tend to come in classic cuts and styles. These are perfect everyday coats and most are work appropriate too. Wool, as opposed to wool blends, tends to be a bit more expensive but if you live in a place that has harsh winters, it’s worth the investment for a coat you’ll year after year. To keep your coat looking its best, store it in a garment bag when it’s not in use and gently brush your coat with a soft suede brush.
Cozy materials are a must this time of year. I love a good faux fur jacket. We saw this really take off over the last few months with the teddy coat trend. It’s one of my personal favorites. A faux fur coat can easily be dressed up for an evening out. They look just as great as a focal piece with your favorite jeans and a pair of boots or for more casual days a pair of sneakers.
Now, this is for those days when it’s just too cold for anything other than a serious winter coat. Living in the city means a lot of time spent outside whether it’s walking to the store, the subway, or even trying to get a cab. A good parka will help you brave the freezing wind chill and snow storms that happen during NYC winters. While they may not always feel the most glamorous, you’ll definitely be glad you have one.
