Why We Decided to Go to Coachella
Late March is when Matt and I decided to go to Coachella. We had talked about it before but didn’t seriously consider it until the last minute. The biggest hurdle was getting over the fact that the festival wasn’t typical content we would post or that was at least the thought. It was “off brand” but something I had wanted to do for many years. The fashion, energy, the scene, etc. It was something both Matt and I wanted to experience at least once. So we did!
So one night, we started looking at flights and I told Matt, just book them. Worst case scenario, we decide not to go and we use that credit for another flight. No big deal. Even after the plane tickets were bought, we still had everything else to take care of; concert tickets, hotel, car, babysitter for Sebastian or partnerships. So we just knocked off each one from the list. We just took the first step and figured out the rest. We were so glad we just went for it.

The trip came together really nicely and quick. Even though I was getting excited, I couldn’t help but think to myself, this whole thing is not necessarily our brand. Are we Coachella people? Every few nights I’d ask Matt, are we making the wrong decision? Will the readers like the content? That fear quickly shifted to it being a great opportunity to just go somewhere and have fun. I got to spend almost an entire week with Matt. It was just the two of us getting lost in the desert together. We will explore and create content along the way. It wasn’t all off the cuff, though, we planned a few things 🙂
And that’s kind of what happened. We created a bunch of great content and had a ton of fun.
Oh, that feeling of stepping outside at LAX and feeling that warm southern California air. We missed that. After picking up the car (Thanks Lexus!), we headed for Palm Springs and reminisced about our road trips to Santa Barbara. When we lived in San Francisco, we took a lot of road trips south along Highway 1. Some good, some bad, mostly fantastic. When we pulled up to The Saguaro Palm Springs, we both got so excited about our weekend together. This place was a gem. It was a colorful “boutique” hotel in the middle of the desert. The colors with the mountains in the background were just such a neat experience. Of course, we immediately wanted to start shooting as the golden hour was approaching and we wanted to catch the sunset.
We got to do so much together that weekend. I’m so, so glad that I put aside my fears of trying something new and just picked up my camera and went to the desert. The whole weekend, we just explored. We found the coolest cactus garden, drove to Joshua Tree, stopped on the side of the highway to take photos in front of windmills and danced like kids at the festival. At times it reminded me of something out of a movie. Just felt free. You can see a lot of what we shot here.
Favorite Coachella Memory
Matt doesn’t know, but my favorite moment of the trip is when we went to the top of Coachella Valley. While looking through Instagram, Matt found this gorgeous view from the mountaintop, so we jumped in the car and followed the directions to the top. As we raced up the mountain to catch the sun before sunset, we found the perfect area for photos. We hopped over the rail and made a little photo session happen on a little spot on the edge of the mountain. Matt snapped my photos for a campaign we were working on and I took tons of photos of Matt wearing his new camera bag. It was just a lot of fun. We stayed for the sunset as it set across Coachella Valley. Good times.
The Lesson
Don’t let fear disguised as sensibility hold you back. I feel confident in who I am and what my brand is. It’s a great thing to be sure of but don’t get so caught up in it that you lose sight of opportunities. Going to Coachella taught me that there’s always room for a little adventure.
