New York during the winter, especially during Christmas is one of the most popular times for people to visit the city. I don’t blame them for wanting to brave the cold temperatures. Christmas time in the city is magical. It’s one of my favorite times here. I often get asked what to wear in NYC in the winter. With so many things to see you’re going to spend a bit of time outside. Not to mention, the biggest method of transportation here is walking. Fall and Spring fashion offers up a ton of beautiful outfits. However, the truth is winter in NYC is about staying warm. With the holiday season in full swing, I thought I’d share the perfect winter outfit for shopping in NYC with friends.

NYC Winter Outfit

The key to this outfit is the layers. They’ll keep you nice and warm. Parts of the city can act as a wind tunnel making it feel colder than it actually is. The layers also enable you to adjust for temperatures as you venture inside stores and restaurants. For going out shopping with friends I’d recommend a puffer jacket, a great pair of jeans, turtleneck, and a pair of boots. I usually go for heels. I walk in them every day. If you’re new to the city or heels, go for sneakers. You’re going to be doing a lot of walking and sneakers will look just as cute. I opted for all black. It’s basically the unofficial signature color for NYC. When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with this one.  Plus, you’ll never have a problem coordinating these pieces with other items in your wardrobe.

One Stop Shopping

In my wardrobe, I like to mix high and low pieces. Not everything needs to come with a premium price tag. Getting a good deal on quality clothes is always a good idea. Living in one of the most expensive cities in the world I’ve learned to appreciate a good deal. I was really excited to partner with Walmart and discover all they have to offer. This is perfect for shopping for an NYC winter outfit where you want might want to splurge for a coat but not for a layering piece like a turtleneck. This is also useful for people visiting the area this time of year that might not be used to these kinds of temperatures. I always hesitate to ask my cousins in Texas to come to visit during this time of year (even though it’s so magical) because I feel like I’d be asking them to stock up on a new wardrobe due to the weather. For those planning a trip here during the winter from warmer parts of the country, a store like Walmart is a great option for adding some much-needed warmth to your wardrobe. They carry brands like Calvin Klein, BCBG, and Steve Madden. There are lots of great deals. Plus, you don’t have to worry about braving huge holiday shopping lines.
