3 Rules For Wearing White

I am a big fan of wearing white to work. Now, I wouldn’t wear it everyday but I think it’s good to mix white into your workwear to provide some diversity. There are a lot of “rules” when it comes to wearing white. Don’t listen to them! Well, except maybe the one about wearing white to a wedding when you aren’t the bride. Outside of that, wear what you want. Fortunately, there are no real fashion police, so if you want to wear white clothing from January through December, the choice is yours.

Nowadays, style is much more of an individual’s own style than that of people blindly following advice without knowing the original reasons behind the look. There truly are no hard-and-fast rules to follow when it comes to fashion and wearing white. That’s how it should be! However, there are some rules that linger and it’s really up to you, if you choose to follow them. There are three that I wanted to touch on and get your opinion as well.

1. Avoid White Clothes In the City?

Seems rational but is that really practical? I guess it is but if a little dirt gets on my white skirt, I get it dry cleaned. Now, New York City can be dirty especially in the summer time. It is not difficult to get your clothes dirty from riding the subway, climbing in and out of cabs, sitting on a dirty seat, etc. When I have a great white skirt, dress or trousers, I am wearing them regardless. That is why many stick with dark colors here in the city because it hides the dirt much better. So there is certainly good reason to avoid it, but I pay no mind when I wear white occasionally to work.

2. Wear The Right Shoes?

This one is pretty straightforward but again, is completely up to your style. Big black pumps paired with white dresses can sometimes be an odd combination, particularly in the summer with something lightweight. When I wear a white dress in the spring or summer, I tend to stick with the more natural tones or white sandals. Some say white shoes should be avoided after Labor Day. Well, not when you have a great pair of white heels. They aren’t staying on the shelf!

3. White Clothing After Labor Day?

Believe it or not there was a time (and still for some) when people stuck to the rule that white clothing was only “allowed” between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This was summertime, after all, a time for picnics, barbecues and a general carefree way of life. Wear white whenever you want. Some call it fashion forward when women boldly cloak themselves in white during the winter, while others are going to hold their nose up or make rude comments no matter what. Fortunately, each one of us makes the rules.

So no matter time of year, regardless of wear you live, feel free to wear white as often as you like and own it. It can be so classy, comfortable, stylish and more. Love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Have a great week!

xo, Olivia

I love the blouse. It is so classy but girly with the print and the ruffles. Love it.
I also love wearing white year round. But I remember back about ten years I had a white pencil jeans skirt and I wanted it to wear in December and my mom did not let me. No it is funny but back then she ruined my whole outfit.

    Greetings Katie
