My Favorite Nighttime Beauty Products

When I was younger, I would always hang out with my mom while she put on her make-up and beauty products. She took great care of her skin and that has always stuck with me and something I try very hard to emulate. It is a daily morning and evening routine.  When I first started my skincare journey, it mainly consisted of me washing my face and adding Olay moisturizer (Olay is a family favorite). Now that I’m in my early thirties, taking care of my skin is the top priority in my beauty routine. I’m always trying new products and staying current in the beauty world.

I’ve been sharing several of my beauty favorites on Instagram Stories, but I wanted to put together a blog post talking about these products and why I love them. I’m in the process of putting together a similar blog post for my morning and travel beauty routines. Be sure to ask any questions in the comment section below.

Make up wipes

A super easy way to take off makeup at the end of the day is to use facial wipes. I do this while I work at my computer early in the evening. This is the first time using Honest beauty products and the facial wipes were a great introduction to their collection. I love that they remove all my make-up, while leaving the skin fresh and moisturized.

I also love Burt’s Bee Cleansing Towelettes. I’ve been using their exfoliating wipes to deep clean my skin, but I also love the Cucumber and Sage for an ultra fresh feeling. They also have wipes available for sensitive skin, making it more gentle on your skin for removing makeup while staying hydrated.

Cleansing Balms

Although I always use facial wipes to remove makeup, I follow them up by using an oil based cleanser. I discovered cleansing balms earlier this year and I’m in love! The foaming cleansers leave my skin nice and fresh, but I feel they take away all my natural oils. My skin always feels dry and tight after using a non-oil based cleanser. For those days that I’m outside all day, leaving my face exposed and gaining layers of dirt, sweat and oil, I like to use a foam cleanser. It gets my skin back to feeling clean and refreshed.

The Erno Lazlo cleansing set is what first got me into this two-step cleansing method. Makes for a great travel set too.

Pestle & Mortar is a new brand to my skincare lineup. The Renew Cleansing Gel is a lightweight cleanser that leaves your skin bright and glowing . I had the opportunity to meet the owner, Sonia, and her passion and dedication for effective skin care products is shown in the quality of her products. Her story is quite incredible. Her family comes from a long tradition of health and healing practice in India. What’s even more incredible.. she’s a mother of five and works alongside her husband, a revered photographer. Take a peak at her story here.

You might remember my review on the Goop products. Well, they’re still going strong in my skincare routine. They have been amazing. The cleansing balm is by far one of my favorite beauty products. It feels likes it’s melting off dirt, makeup and other unwanted oils as I massage into skin. Using their muslin cloth, I wipe away any and all impurities, leaving my skin moisturized and refreshed.

There are several ways to exfoliate the skin. I alter between using a gentle facial scrub and my Clarisonic. I typically exfoliate anywhere from 1-2 times per week. I have dry  skin, so I  don’t like to stripe away the natural oils on my face.

Face Masks

Although I’ve been using sheet masks for years, I’m starting to have a new appreciation for them. I’ve always viewed masks as a “fun” beauty product that I use occasionally but not providing a huge benefit to my skin. Well, I was wrong. These little masks help bring my skin back to life after a long day at the office, a night out with friends or a restless night with baby. Erno Laszlo has an entire line of masks; everything from sheet masks to gel masks. The Firm and Lift gel mask hydrates your skin helping to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Retinol is one of the first beauty products that I used in my early twenties and started out using it around my laugh lines. I bought my first tube of ROC deep wrinkle night cream and I never looked back.

Retinol Products

Retinol is one of the best products to use to battle those fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps smooth out your skin’s texture and reduce hyper-pigmentation and other dark spots. Last, but not least, it helps reduce your pores from clogging, making it ideal for someone with acne.

As you might know, retinol is a powerful ingredient and if used during the day, be sure to use SPF and potentially consider wearing a hat to protect your skin. Retinol is something I only apply at night, because I know it’s too risky for me to remember to reapply SPF and keep my hat on the entire day.

I’ve used a lot of retinol products in my lifetime, but I’ve been using Dr. Brandt’s 2% Retinol Complex Serum as my everyday nighttime product. However, the Retinol Eye Cream from Dr. Brandt is quickly becoming my favorite. The lightweight cream can be easily applied under my eyes and I can immediately start to feel the cooling effects.

The Superstar Retinol Night Oil by Pastel & Mortar is one of the most earthy and organic products I’m currently using. The oil smells like it came straight out of the ground and I actually love that. The Superstar is interchanged with Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleep Night Oil.

Remember earlier when I said the Goop Cleansing balm is my favorite skincare product, the night oil by Sunday Riley is my #2 product in my skincare lineup. Beauty editors have referred to this skincare product as their must-have for years.

After apply the Sleeping Night Oil, I’ll wait five minutes and apply Sunday Riley’s Good Genes. I gently massage the product into my skin. Good Genes is lactic acid treatment. I’m no esthetician, but in short, lactic acid helps rejuvenate your skin, giving you a brighter and more even skin tone.

Night Moisturizing

When it comes to creams and moisturizers, my view is the more the merrier. When I think about a night cream, I want it to have a light scent and a thick texture to seal in any moisture. The TULA products are some of the newest to my routine. The TULA Day and Night Hydrating Cream, along with the TULA Revitalizing Eye Cream are used daily, especially when I need an extra punch of hydration for my skin.

The Elemis Night Recovery Cream-Oil is a lighter moisturizer than TULA, but helps nourish the skin. Giving you a healthy glow when you wake up in the morning. The most important thing with moisturizers, is to use them! Don’t forget to apply them from your forehead to your neck. The nights I don’t apply moisturizer to my face, I can always feel the difference the next day and it’s not good. Apply, apply, apply.

Some nights I don’t make it through all these products but I try to be sure and cleanse, tone, apply  retinol, moisturize and hydrate. One final point, even though you probably already know this, but apply your products from the thinnest to thickest if at all possible.

Please share! What are some of you favorite night time skincare products? I’m always wanting to know what to look out for. Would love your suggestions. Leave them in the comments below!

xo, Olivia

Thanks, Olivia! You went over more products than I thought you would ( love!) and it’s given me a few new suggestions for my night routine. I currently use Olay to wash my face then I follow it with Estee Lauder Night Repair. I found Deciem (don’t know if you’ve heard of it). I’ve used a couple of the Ordinary products – Rose Hip oil and the Caffeine solution. I love trying new products!

For my night time skin care routine- I like to switch up my moisturizers! But I love the whole glossier line. I use their face wash, followed by witch hazel, then the glossier serum trio, then either the priming moisturizer rich, or neutrogena hydrogel moisturizer. I like the rich moisturizer for when my skin is really dry, and the hydrogel for when I want a lighter one. Thanks for sharing your routine- I’ll have to try some of your products!

Love this post! I didn’t even realize you could find exfoliating makeup wipes. I’ll definitely have to give them a try! Do you ever use toners at night? I noticed you didn’t mention any (unless I’m blind and missed it 🙂 haha). I just started using a toner and I usually only use it at night, but now I’m realizing maybe I should in the a.m.! I’d love to know your thoughts. Thanks!

Yes, I always use a toner. Day and night. Right now I”m using Kopari Coconut Rose Toner and FARMAESTHETICS, but I’m on the market for something else. Yes! I’ll likely write a follow up post, because I’m sure I’ll try out a bunch before I find the right one. Thanks for stopping by and following along! Appreciate all your support!
