Weekend Getaway to Kennebunkport, Maine

Destination: Kennebunkport, Maine

Travel Time: 5 hours from NYC (by car)
Stay: 3 days
Hotel: Yachtsman Lodge & Marina

One of our favorite places here on the east coast is Kennebunkport, Maine. It is a quaint little town just south of Portland. We first visited a few years ago in search of lobster rolls. We found them! I’ll share our favorite a little later on. This was Sebastian’s first road trip and he was a champ! Poor little guy was strapped up for six hours. Batman came with us on our first trip to Kennebunkport, so he also joined us on the trip. He loves Maine!

We stay at a small hotel along the Kennebunkport river. Our patio rolls onto the lawn right on the banks of the river. Batman gets to run around and chase ducks. Where we stay is  just a short walk to downtown and the best lobster roll ever! The beach is just a short drive away and you have a couple really cool beaches nearby. A couple years ago, we went out on a lobster boat and pulled a few traps. It was really cool to see lobstering first hand. We got a glimpse of the Bush compound as well. It’s pretty amazing.

We are starting a Weekend Getaway Series, where we’ll be sharing all about our little trips. Today, we are sharing our six favorite things to do in Kennebunkport. If you get a chance to visit Maine, be sure and check a few of these off your list!

The Yachtsman Lodge & Marina

We have stayed here every year. The reason we booked this in the beginning was because they allowed dogs. We wanted to bring Batman with us and it looked great. It couldn’t be more ideal for us! The location is perfect, right along the Kennebunkport River. It’s just a few blocks from the “downtown” area. You walk right out to the marina and all the sailboats. Really cool. They have canoes on the marina that you can take. We all pile in one and head down river to get a lobster roll or two or three :). It’s quiet, beautiful and close to everything you need.

The Clam Shack

Hands down the best lobster roll either of us have had. It’s super straightforward; a delicious round roll with big chunks of lobster. A little butter and slight bit of mayo and that’s it. It’s situated right off the little bridge the crosses over the river and just a few blocks from where we stay. It’s really cool sitting on the picnic table, eating a lobster roll right on the river. An absolute must stop.

Rugosa Lobster Tour

Super cool way to spend a couple hours. You get onto the boat right near downtown on the river. The tour takes you out into the ocean to look over the lobster route that leads out to the Bush compound on this little peninsula. It’s pretty spectacular. During the trip, they pull a couple traps and you get to hold a freshly caught lobster. Really fun experience.

Aunt Marie’s Ice Cream

Just a cute little place with delicious ice cream. It’s just on the other side of the bridge from The Clam Shack. Perfect to swing by after a lobster roll and then just walk around town.

Goose Rocks Beach

This is our favorite part of coming up to Kennebunkport. It’s only a 15 min drive from where we stay and open to dogs before 8am and after 6pm. Batman is in absolute heaven when we get to the beach! He sprints around chasing the seagulls and dipping his toes in the water. It’s so gorgeous at sunset with the majestic sky and waves crashing onto the beach.

Ogunquit

It is a quant bustling seaside town just south of Kennebunkport with so much charm. There is a trail that runs along the seashore called, the Marginal Way trail, that goes for a little over a mile to a small fishing cove. Beautiful! They have really cool little shops, cure little building and pedestrian bridges. It’s the perfect little beautiful place by the sea.

Let me know if you have any other favorite spots up in Maine to share. Would love to know what we are missing!
