Little Changes That Made A Big Difference in Our NYC Living Room

small-changes-to-a-living-room-for-a-more-modern-look-nyc-living-how-to-update-your-living-room-nyc-blog-corporate-catwalk-new-york-city-6With all the changes happening in our home, one of the things that I’m most excited about is the recent update of our living room. As someone who loves home decor, I’m constantly on Pinterst looking for decor ideas. For our New York City apartment, it’s important the common living space is warm and inviting to our guests. What we found with our old living room setup, is that it felt crowded even though it is a fairly large space. We needed to incorporate smaller and “lighter” pieces into our home. The vibrant curtains, although beautiful, they were very overwhelming for the room. We swapped out the yellow and white chevron curtains for white cotton curtains from West Elm. We have quite a few windows, so it was important to have something that wasn’t too overwhelming and didn’t take away from the view.

As part of the update, we wanted to bring in a slightly smaller sectional. As much as we loved our older sofa, we needed something a little higher off the ground and not so large. The Luca sectional from Rove Concepts was the perfect fit. If you’re not familiar with Rove Concepts, was founded in 2011 and based in Vancouver, BC.  They deliver extraordinary handcrafted mid-century furniture that brings your home to life. They have an amazing selection of furniture and offer customized sofa/sectional design. You can choose the the type, color, and fabric and they will custom-make your sofa/sectional for you. It’s really cool! We also have a Floor Mirror from Rove and it fits perfectly on the other side of the room. Great for my selfies! What’s so great about having a comfortable and light grey sofa, is that adding accent pillows and throws was easy to accomplish! The Diamond Medallian Throw Pillow and Noland Throw Pillows from Serena & Lily worked perfectly with the sectional. Ideally I’d love to have the entire sofa covered with pillows, just not sure if that’s practical for our living space. Maybe one day! I’m ALWAYS cold, so throws are essential for our home. The diamond weave throw is what we put on the sofa for Batman. We don’t mind having him on the sofa, but we like to keep him in one area. It keeps the furniture lasting longer and gives him some boundaries. The throw from Loloi is one of my favorite throws I’ve owned. I love mixing texture in a room. The piece is beautiful, lightweight, and still keeps me warm.

As someone who’s always taking (attempting) flat lays, I’ve been on the lookout for the perfect marble tables for a while now. As much I loved our vintage mid century coffee table, it was a little too large for the room. The marble coffee table and marble side table are from Article and fit perfectly with the aesthetic of our home, especially for the price. Article is also based in Vancouver and provide a curated selection of beautiful furniture. Super cool back story on Article, they were founded by four software engineers, who were inspired to start Article after an adventure north of the Arctic Circle! Both tables are incredibly easy to assemble, but incredible quality. You can feel it in the weight of the marble top.

The rug might look familiar from our previous room design. Here is the updated version from Hayneedle. We love shag rugs, but we’ve had a few issues with the shedding. We already have two pets, so we wanted something that didn’t shed as much as your traditional “shag” rug. The rug covers a large area of the living room, which we were hesitant at first, but as we started adding more pieces to the apartment, we realized that it fit the space perfectly, especially since it was a neutral color and pattern. The moroccan pouf, also from Hayneedle, is an updated version of our original gold pouf in our apartment. After four years of Batman jumping on and off the pouf to get onto the sofa, we needed an updated version of the pouf. The final piece to the puzzle was the bar cart. Although, I’m not utilizing the bottles on this little cart at the moment, fear not, it will be put to good use after the baby arrives, especially during the holidays. If you live in NYC, you might be able to relate as we have a window unit and it’s a big eye sore. The bar cart and accessories is beautiful and fits perfectly in the window area. You can get a better look at the bar cart here, It was a big hit at our baby shower.

Hi, are you still happy with your couch from Rove? What do you like / dislike about it now that it’s been almost 2 years? I’m considering getting a Luca myself and the reviews on site are good, but no way of knowing how long they have had the piece.

Hi Aimee, we love the Rove sofa. It’s been great for our lifestyle. It’s easy to clean and comfy. Ironically enough we’re downsizing to make room for my son’s stuff, so we are getting a small sofa, without a lounge. Good luck!
